Tourism in Saint Raphael
When visiting Saint-Raphaël, young and old alike can enjoy a host of diversified activities, thanks to the seaside resort’s characteristic assets. On the seafront, you’ll be spoilt for choice with some thirty equally attractive beaches, ranging from fine sand and pebbles to coves and caves. In the open sea, indulge in water sports such as scuba diving and water skiing, or opt for short swims and sea walks, or why not take a boat trip. Not forgetting, of course, light sailing, windsurfing, sea kayaking and much more.
For those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground, especially hiking enthusiasts, Saint-Raphaël is also the gateway to the Sentier du Littoral, formerly known as the Sentier des douaniers. Horse-riding fans will also be delighted with the 100 km of bridle paths. For cyclists, experienced or not, the Estérel massif offers 100 km of mountain bike trails. Other sports and leisure activities include climbing, archery and even tennis. If you want a bonus on all these activities with family and friends, come and visit in mid-February for the mimosa festival, in July for the jazz festival, or in December for the light festival.
But Saint-Raphaël doesn’t stop there. If you’re a lover of culture, make time to visit this city rich in history. In the old town first of all, a guided tour organized by the tourist office reveals some of the town’s historical and cultural heritage, including the old 14th-century ramparts. Then, from the top of its tower, the Romanesque church of Saint-Rafeu, surrounded by the “village quarter”, offers a breathtaking view of the Esterel mountain range. On boulevard Félix-Martin, the Basilique Notre Dame de la Victoire is an emblematic building, with its façade depicting the archangel Raphael. As for the Jardin de Bonaparte, it’s the roof of the parking lot that seems the most interesting, especially for children with its play areas; but it’s just as pleasant for everyone, with a breathtaking view over the bay and the old port. The coastal path alone takes in the Baumette lighthouse, the Boulouris and Dramont beaches, the little port of Poussaï, the Dramont semaphore and the Agay roadstead. Finally, the town center, the markets, Valescure and its golf course, the Archaeological Museum and much more, represent a blend of the modern and ancient sides of the town.
Around Saint Raphaël
On the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, Saint-Raphaël is a gentle town and a popular destination in the south of France. Once you’ve discovered the town’s iconic hamlet of Dramont and its seaside district of Anthéor, famous for its viaduct and eponymous beach, there’s plenty more to discover in the surrounding area. Head for Fréjus, for example, and visit its Arènes, or Puget sur Argens, or the Estérel massif. Hikers will also be delighted by the famous Corniche d’or, a winding road linking Saint-Raphaël and Cannes by the sea. Boat excursions are also available from St Raphael along the nearby Mediterranean coast.
