Tourism in the Gorges du Verdon

Probably one of the most spectacular sites in Europe, the Gorges du Verdon, a vertiginous canyon with sheer cliffs, will delight lovers of wild nature and outdoor sports. There are plenty of opportunities for hiking along the ledges several hundred meters above the green waters of the Verdon, where you can also enjoy canoeing, rafting and other white-water sports.

If you like to make new discoveries, electric boat trips in the Basses Gorges will even enable you to discover the natural riches of this part of the region, where nature is still wild and perfectly preserved. At lunchtime, a picnic on the shores of lakes Esparron and Montmeyan would be a good idea to recharge your batteries before setting off on your next adventure. The more inquisitive can spend hours pedal-boating or exploring the surrounding area in a canoe, while the more discreet can go fishing and relax while waiting for a catch. Alternatively, there are a number of family-friendly hiking trails, such as the Blanc-Martel, Cadières de Brandis or Siréniens paths.

Apart from sporting activities and nature discovery, you can also deepen your knowledge of the Gorges du Verdon by visiting the Musée de la Préhistoire. Built by Norman Foster, an English architect, the museum houses several rooms, all presenting objects and relics found during explorations made in this region between the years 1957 and 1971. The Museum consists of a cave that once served as a dwelling, a village, and a room used for the various permanent exhibitions and, occasionally, for conferences.

There are many villages to visit in the Gorges du Verdon region. Each is authentic and has its own history. So it would be a shame to miss them during your visit. Among the must-sees are the village of Montmeyan, La Verdière, the perched village of Fox, Saint-Julien Le Montagnier and Ginasservis.
