Tourism in Monaco
The Principality of Monaco has often been the talk of the celebrity press, but it has much more to offer than its jet-set image, with its casino built by Louis Garnier, architect of the Paris Opera, its exceptional oceanographic museum, its superb exotic gardens and its princely palace. Monaco-Ville, also known as the Rock, is the heart of the state itself, where the Princely Palace is built. The Palace can be visited daily between April and October. In Monaco-Ville, history is traced in every nook and cranny of the city, where ancient buildings are particularly numerous. You’ll also find several sites that are part of Monaco’s heritage, such as the Cathedral, which serves as a mausoleum for the princely family, the Oceanographic Museum, created by Prince Albert himself and where several marine species are exhibited, and the Saint-Martin Gardens, which link the Oceanographic Museum to the Cathedral.
Monte Carlo is another of Monaco’s famous hilltop districts. It’s where the best gamblers spend their time in Monaco’s famous casino. There’s also the Salle Garnier, home of the Monaco Opera, and the city’s most prestigious hotels and restaurants, such as the Hôtel de Paris and Café de Paris. Monte-Carlo is also the starting point for the Formula 1 Grand Prix, a famous motor race held every May.
If you’re planning to go to the beach while you’re in Monaco, the only one open to the public is in Monte Carlo. Here you can practice all the water sports you want. Water-skiing, jet-skiing, windsurfing, wakeboarding and even parasailing are all possible.
There are several other famous districts in the Principality. At La Condamine, an open market is held every morning to display and sell local produce, including fruit and vegetables. Fontvieille is home to the Louis II stadium and Monaco heliport. When it comes to daytime and evening activities, Le Larvotto is the place to be. Tourists go there mainly for summer sports, to take part in the Principality’s evening events, or simply to enjoy the beach and the sea. If you have a thirst for culture, don’t forget to visit the Des Moneghettis district, home to the city’s Museum of Anthropology.
