French municipality located in the Var in the PACA region, Callas is a first-class tourist destination. Nestled in a privileged location between the sea and the mountains, the village offers a Provençal climate to all those who live there, which tourists greatly appreciate. The biodiversity and diversity of the landscape make it a haven of peace for nature travelers as well as for those who seek tranquility in order to recharge their batteries.
The village of Callas, in the heart of the Var, is a typical village of the Basses-Alpes with steep, small streets, vaulted alleys and squares with fountains. Callas, famous for its olive trees, used to have 23 functioning mills during the 19th century. Today, the old mill can be visited, but for those who prefer, the site of the wild gorges de Pennafort is worth a hike, situated near the village. It should be noted that Camping Les Pêcheurs is about 30 minutes by car from the Commune of Callas, or about 24 km, if you take the D25 road.
Made up of buildings with particularly authentic architecture, the village of Callas is also characterised by dwellings spaced by narrow and sometimes arched alleys, as well as by fountains and impressive greenery decorating the many tourist places. During your stay in this part of the Var, take the opportunity to take part in the various guided tours through the city and its surroundings to discover its rich historical heritage. You will surely discover the most famous remains and monuments of Callas, which are part of its heritage: the Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Pennafort with its dome, the Chapel of Saint-Auxille, located on a hill 1.5 km southeast of the city, the Pennafort Gorges, the "pied de Samson", but also the ruins of the castle, the Oppidum and the Pigeonnier. There are many sites of interest worth a visit, so make sure you plan your visits carefully, as it would be a shame to miss any.
In order to discover all the corners of the region, it is also possible to participate in the hikes, which are organized every week. If you would like more information on this subject, you just have to contact the local tourist office. Very popular with holidaymakers, horseback riding at the Haras de Pennafort is also recommended. It should be noted that football, tennis and fitness fields are open to everyone.
Callas' festivities include a breakfast on Place Saint-Éloi on May 1, a craft fair on August 15 and a hiking race in the three villages in November. What is certain is that you will always be in the right place, no matter when you decide to go.
